I recently bought a new computer. No anti-virus type protection installed yet.

I installed a shareware program and immediately I have many pop-ups whenever I am surfing. It is not related to the site I am visiting... just the fact that I am on the internet. I am certain there is some virus (or trojan or adware or whatever) installed into my computer that is doing it.

I have Windows XP home edition. The pop-ups always seem to originate from a temp folder in my documents and settings folder. I have uninstalled all the shareware and deleted temp folder but it keeps happening.

How do I fix it? Do I need to run CWshredder or HijackThis? If so, please give me advice where to start?

Thanks in advance.
