A week ago, I was stopped from beign able to shut down my computer and for some reason everytime I'm on my computer after a while it flicks across the screen (just for half a second). I think I've got a virus, trojan or something and in fact I'm 90% sure I have once but I've used several anti virus protection programs and it won't pick it up. What should I do and will they find a way cure for it eventually?

Also several people I know have had a similar virus/ trojan and they are having problems and they got it around the same time as me.

What operating system do you have and why are you so sure you have a virus? Several different av programs didn't detect one right? Just because your computer isn't shutting down properly doesn't mean you have a virus. Shutdown problems are common with Windows. Here's a shutdown troubleshooter that may help with that:

What do you mean by "after a while it flicks across the screen?" What flicks across the screen? But maybe the monitor is degausing itself. Can you give us more details on your problems? If the screen is flickering try changing the refresh rate to the highest Hz setting allowed for the resolution (800x600 etc) you're using. Your monitor's manual should tell you what that number is. You would do that in display properties--settings tab--advanced button--adapter tab.

You could run an online virus scan here if you haven't already:

And Moosoft's Cleaner is a trojan specific scanner that's excellent and free to try. You could run it to check for trojans but trojans don't normally cause system problems like viruses do. Trojans are programs used by hackers to access computers remotely.

When it flicks a black line runs upwards across the whole length of the screen and it goes out of vision. As for why I’m so sure it’s a virus. Probably the main reason is that three people I know have had the same problem and have all said it was a virus and they got it in on the same day, which is a bit too much of a coincidence for me. Then there’s other odd occurings, which started after my comp couldn’t shut down like the fact that every time I log back into my computer I keep getting these messages:

Runtime Error!
Program: C\PROGRAM FILES\DATE MANAGER\DATE MANAGER.EXE

abnormal program termination

Windows socket error: (10049), on API 'connect'

And finally every time I press ctrl, Alt and Delete the screen that appears isn’t won’t that says something like “To restart youou computer press control alt, delete” instead Chinese writing appears altough not always but has done so on several occassions. Maybe I’m a bit paranoid but all these things happening all at once are a bit of coincidence for me.

Also I have Windows 98 and I will be doing the recommendations you made.

A black line across the screen usually means a corrupted executable file. Try opening the file with a HEX editor. You'd see the program has nothing inside.

"the main reason is that three people I know have had the same problem and have all said it was a virus and they got it in on the same day"

1. Can you ask them what virus it was/is or were they just guessing it's a virus?

2. Did you run the online scan?

3. Windows socket error: (10049), on API 'connect'

This is the best I can do for that:

4. What's 'DATE MANAGER.EXE' do?

5. None of your problems sound like they're created by a virus to me but who knows. Go to the link below and download Startlog.com into any folder then doubleclick on it and run it. It'll create 2 text files on your desktop. Copy and paste the results of just Startlog (not the stubpaths file) to your reply here. It may or may not show us something relevant.
