Does anyone here use Virtual Server and if so hows the performance? What general applications do you use it for? Seems that with todays high performace servers that using the emulation techniques could prove very cost effective. Running Virtual PC at home and thinking about maybe givin Server a shot in my corporate environment. Any input would be great!

Internally at Microsoft we use Virtual Servers in our workshops for VBScript which run Windows Server 2003 as a DC.

Your performance will totally depend on the available memory. Virtual Server allows you to allocate system memory to the Virtual Server, just like with any dedicated install, less than 1GB of memory for a server will give you a decrease in performance. I highly recommend that the hosting machine have a minimum of 2GB memory.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

You can get a free version of VMWares GSX server now called VMWare server from VMWare.com

We use the ESX linux version and run Windows 2003 servers on blades and it runs a treat!

We have 2 x dual core AMD with 4 GB RAM and we run 3 of 4 servers per blade.

ESX with Virtual Cneter also has a nice feature that allows you to move a running server onto a another blade using something called VMotion.

My view is why run an unstable platform on an unstable platform... If you can afford it go for ESX over Microsoft any day. The VMWare virtual server is create for testing but again it runs on windows server
