Can anyone provide some information regarding a virtual server, how it is used and set up, and what it actually does. I have a DLINK DFL-300 firewall with the option to create a virtual server on it but can't find any information on setting it up.

isn't that the DLINK way of describing a DMZ ?
If so, then you can make an internal IP address reachable on the internet by publishing services via the DLINK router
(or even maybe by providing a real public IP address and route the requests & answers through) --------------------------------------------------------------------

How can I believe in God when just last week I got my tongue caught in the roller of an electric typewriter?

No D-link also has a dmz zone. The virtual server is set up so that you can select various ports to go to specific ip's on your internal network. For instance, I have ftp going specifically to address 140 on my internal net. I have ssh going to 100, etc....
