Here is the situation,
I have a Brother hl-5140 printer I am trying to install on one of our machines. I am using a USB cable to connect the printer. So, I install the driver using the instructions, but it doesn't show the printer in the printer list. I decide, well let me install it manually.

I click on add printer and get to the point where I choose what port I want it to install on. Now, this is where I get confused. On some machines I will see a port for USB called USB001 virtual printer port or something of the likes. Well, this computer doesn't have it listed under the ports drop down field. I thought this was odd, so I checked around a few other machines and some have it, some don't. I ended up just using a parallel cable for now to get it working, but my question is this.

How come the virtual printer port is listed on some machines and not others? Is there something missing on the machines that don't have it?

You need to go to and download the USB port driver that comes with the driver for the printer.

That will install the USB port that you will use to print with.

Hope that helps,

Erik

Thanks, I'll look into that. I thought I had install the right driver from the disk, cut I may just need the usb/parallel port driver.
