Hi All,

Sorry for the newbie question but I don't know if what I want can be done. I have a windows XP set up with shared hard drives that all of the users on the network can see and use. When I travel out of town with my laptop, I want to be able to connect to the network and be able to see and use all of the shared drives. I do not want to simply log in remotely to one of the computers on the network, I want to actually appear as though I am on the network right there in the office.

Please let me know if you know what I need to research so I can accomplish my task.

Again, sorry if this is a dumb question. I will research whatever is mentioned in this thread.

Thank you.

One method:

If your network people allow "virtual private network" (VPN) you can ask them to install a client on your laptop and give you log on credentials, and token.

After connecting to your work network from your laptop via VPN you can "Remote Desktop connect" to your work PC and it's just like being at work.

actually, I would like to not log into a physical computer there because all of the computers will be in use for some other task when I use my laptop. really what i want is to have that virtual network without having to log into a physical computer at work. is that possible?

You don't have to Remote Desktop Connect, that's simply how I do it.

You can log in to your network with VPN and map drives to your shares (file servers other Desktops etc.)

You may need to map the drives fully qualified examples:

\\Server.Domain.topDomain.com\shareName
\\FileServer.ms.msoft.com\shareName
\\Desktop.ms.msoft.com\shareName
or maybe even direct address
\\123.34.456.678\... etc.

You need to investigate setting up a VPN. It will work exactly as you desire it to.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.
