virtual machine uses

A virtual machine is a way of running an operating system from within an operating system. It allows to install another operating system as a guest and allow to configure a shared internet connection.
The most popular Virtual Machine software is VMWare. There is heaps of info on their website. To answer your questions:
-it can be installed easily
-it is not free, but you can have a 30-day trial
The downside when using a Virtual Machine is that the system resources have to be shared. The upside is that you can run both systems at the same time.
Personally, I see no need to run virtual machines unless you are doing application development on different platforms, however some some prefer the convenience of being able to run two operating systems at the same time.
A dual-boot system is much better for performance.
