I have assigned a virtual ext. in VM and AA for the accounting dept.. We can call into it and dial the ext. and hear the greeting. However when we dial from a telephone set it says NOT IN SERVICE. We can transfer calls to 301 but not dial it manually for any set.

If you are trying to dial into it for the sole purpose of leaving a message then you must press feature 980 then enter mbox 301.Same for transferring outside callers to that mailbox...press feature 986 then mbox 301. the system is correct in saying "not in service"...this is a mailbox not an extension, from your description.

What is happening to you is that when you call in and get the AA then dial 301 the auto attendent is transfering the call to the mailbox. When you pick up your phone and dial 301 the phone system is looking for telephone 301 and unable to find any DN assigned to 301. you have two ways of correcting this. First is use feature 980 to leave a message in the mailbox and feature 986 to transfer a call to the mailbox. second is to create a hunt group with 1 member the one member of the group is the DN of the Voicemail and then set the hunt group to overflow to the DN of the voicemail. then change the DN of the hunt group to 301. now when you dial 301 either for transfer or just to call it you will get 15 seconds of ringback followed by a transfer to the voicemail DN with 301 (the new number of the hunt group) as the target mailbox.

Or you could connect an old phone in the telephone closet, and forward it to vm, or the same with an ATA.
