Virtual Directory Question

as answered in your other post, virtual directories are IIS aliases.
IIS will serve files from a virtual directory using the http protocol (including webdav). it also does so over the ftp protocol although you have to set the Virtual Directory up again.
it does not do so under other protocols as IIS does not handle them.
