I see that quite a few people have had problems with this, but my problem is slightly different. Recently, our IT Department upgraded their virus definition files and decided to push them down to the workstations through the server. When they did this I started getting the Virtual Device Driver error 'close' or 'ignore'. Regardless of which one is chosen, the machine continues to boot up.
I read the Microsoft fix using regedt32 and deleted the VDD directory in the CurrentControlSet but then when I tried to add it back it simply states in the right window pane, "Failure of Device Driver". In which case, Microsoft says you will have to rebuild the registry but doesn't say exactly how to rebuild the registry.
So, after reading the posts on this site, since I know for a fact it is the Symantec virus software that has created this issue, I tried installing Symantec (Corporate Anti-Virus Edition) manually, and it wouldn't reinstall. Meanwhile, this workstation is without virus protection...
Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this problem? Please help!!!
