I have just added office '97 to my XP OS computer. I keep getting 'virtual memory too low' message and the desktop goes extremly jerky now and again. I have tried letting windows run my virtual memory and I have raised the value and tried that. Any ideas.
Thanks
Graeme

I had a feeling there was a known bug between Office 97 and Windows XP that causes this, although I am not entirely sure.

Surely if you have a nice shiny new OS, you might want to consider upgrading your office suite as well?

How much physical memory do you have in the machine? 128MB should be enough for XP, but the more the merrier!! I run my XP install with 512MB, and the same on my dual processor p3 machine, while the NT4 server only has 256MB (running Oracle and Exchange 5.5 for development use).

Virtual Memory is not necessarily directly dependent on the amount of RAM in your system. Although not having enough RAM can cause problems, adding more than the average (128-256MB) rarely makes a difference in terms of VM performance.

I suspect some kind of incompatibility as well between '97 and XP. I suggest upgrading to 2000, which I'm sure you can find a cheap copy somewhere online, like at EBAY.

The other option is to locate the Word executable and do this:

1) Right-click the executable and select Properties.
2) Click the Compatibility tab and check the option "Run this program in compatibility mode."
3) Select the operating system that the program was originally intended to run on (in this case, Win95 or 98 should work).

I agree with the other posters. I am (although I cannot prove it either) VERY sure that '97 and XP have compatibility issues.

I have office 97 loaded on a xp home machine with 256m ram and also on a xp pro machine with 512m. I have not experienced any problems with either machine. So i don't think it is an xp - office97 compatability issue.
You might check and see what other tasks are running.

dippydipper,
What's the EXACT error message you're getting? Does it really state the phrase "virtual memory" or does it just state "low resources"?

There's a common problem with the Normal.dot template that occasionally happens on some workstations. Here's what MS has to say:

thankyou all,
It is an Exact phrase stating vitual memory low.It is not an error message though it comes in the form of a 'speech bubble' from the start bar.
thankyou anyway. I'll have to dip into my pockets for updated office.

Dont use Find Fast. There are some articles on this program that is part of the Office 97 suite. Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and see if it is running.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
