I used the Christmas nights to set up a RedHat (6.0) Linux
on my home computer, and it works great with one exception:

It could be very nice to have an X-server up and running, but Xfree86 and I havn't yet agreed on how to do with the video card on the computer. It's a Diamond Viper 770 (non-Ultra) in an AGP slot.

For the moment I do not care for bad resolution or few colors, although 85Hz vertical update frequency would be goot for my eyes, I think.

I hope there must be some way to let the Xfree86 and the V770 to come on terms. I've tried to tell Xfree86Setup about the videocard not having much memory and me wanting 256 colors, but the only thing that happends is an errormessage nr 111 from some unix-to-X-socket.

Hmmm do you have your Vid card & monitor documentation handy?
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller. Contact me if you think you've got one that I don't :)

The monitor documentation - yes.
The videocard user guide - yes, as printed pdf-file.

I've also found out that the graphic processor (NVIDIA RIVA TNT2) is supposed to have a driver for Xfree86 made public by the producer, but as far as I can find out, the driver is said to be updated, and meanwhile withdrawn.
In case someone else get the same problem:

My solution was to download rpm-files from the latest RedHat-version, i.e. 6.1. The ones for XFree86 might suffice.

Before that I had unsuccessfully tried to build the latest version of Xfree86 from source downloaded from the nearest ftp-mirror, but that way required more Unix- and X- knowledge than I possessed.

With the new binaries, and dependencies and such taken care of by the rpm-system, it suddenly was no problem at all.

IIRC, the original reference drivers released for the TNT2 were a little buggy, hence the withdrawl.

The tip to get the latest rpms is a good one to remember. I never install anything onto a RPM based system these days unless it's from RPM. As you say, dependencies, etc, are all taken care of, and later upgrades will go much more smoothly.
