I've created a virtual client which has 2 virtual ethernet adapters, one from each VIO server with different Vlan id's. I'm then using etherchannel in backup mode which seems to work nicely. However, on boot, I get the following error against both virtual ethernet adapters in the errpt:

LABEL: ECH_CANNOT_SET_CLBK
IDENTIFIER: 5561971C

Date/Time: Tue 16 Jan 10:13:14 2007
Sequence Number: 6
Machine Id: 00C178FE4C00
Node Id: tedev1
Class: S
Type: PERM
Resource Name: ent2

Description
UNSUPPORTED IOCTL IN DEVICE DRIVER

Probable Causes
UNSUPPORTED IOCTL IN DEVICE DRIVER

Failure Causes
UNSUPPORTED IOCTL IN DEVICE DRIVER

Recommended Actions
USE SUPPORTED ETHERNET ADAPTER

Detail Data
Unable to set link status callback in adapter: adapter does not support EtherChannel Backup
ent1

Has anyone else seen this? Like I said, the etherchannel is working (using the Force A Failover option). VIOS is at 1.3.0.0, AIX is at 5300-05-04.

Thanks,
John

Interestingly enough, I just did this about two weeks ago and called it in to AIX support.

You'll probably want to call it in yourself to verify this........but they told me this is expected and normal for vio clients. This is because AIX expects to see a physical device which sends link status messages, but it can't because it's virtual.

Make sure you use a gateway or router as a pingable device if you're using a NIB etherchannel.

Cheers hfaix, have a star! Don't see the point calling it in if you've already done so...
