Viewing amount of data transfered

Hello, while doing PC images, I'd like to see how much data has been transferred between the internal HDD and the External USB HDD.

I think there's a process that keeps track of that information. Is there a way to view how much data has passed?
It will give me a good indication of how much time a transfer takes.

Do you copy from the commandline?
If then I don't think there's a builtin progressbar in Linux,
but you can make one yourself.

Thank you, that's a nice little piece of code there, but I was actually looking for something to track a dd transfer. This script looks like it only works with cp.
