View Time Security and Prompts

Hi -
I have set-up a report and associated BVs so that a super user can schedule it and then based on the BV filter on current CE User Name and db field, each person sees their own data. Ok.

The problem/question i have is on how to implement a user prompt into this model as well.
Example: Admin schedules a report with no filter. Users view an instance and data is filtered down to their rows (BV filter, View Time Security). Now i want to incorporate a prompt so users can further filter data available to them.
Is this possible going about it in this fashion?
Any other suggestions?
using CR XI and BOE XI.

Sure,

The Row Level security is independant from any report parameters you may employ to further filter records.

For example - row level security may only allow me to see information for let's say New York - but a report parameter (prompt) will pass further city information to the record selection that will filter the report even further.

To clarify using you're example of NY or states.
If I set row level security on state and have 1 user with rights to only see, say, New England states. No problem so far.
Now, when someone schedules a report (someone with ALL Data Access) that has parameters/prompts won't they need to choose them right up front at the time of schedule?

Secondly, if the prompt is on State and the user that only has rights to New England states, will the prompt to select specific states show all 50 or only RI, CT, MA, NH, ME, and VT? (this is what i need)

Ultimately, what I am trying to achieve is to utilize View time security through the BV filters, have users view and instance of a report, and choose from a list of parameters. But it is a requirement that the parameter list only include data they have rights to (sort of pre-filtered).

You said "row level security is independant from report parameters" but I do not want that. Can this be done?

Firstly - XI is the first edition allowing dynamic parameter pick lists - wasn't even possible before.

You are correct in thinking that if I could see all states and scheduled the report for *ALL - as each user views the instance - they will only see the states they are supposed to see.

However - if someone with New England rights ran the report for NY - and then I came in after to view the instance I too would only see NY.

You can have multiple scheduled instances to serve both - one that runs for all states - and is filtered when viewed, and also another with specific states filtered via a prarameter.

To expect the software to filter the picklist based on security probably can be done - but the extra time in processing the pick list everytime the report is run will probably add too much processing time - the user would have to wait for the generated picklist first which is like running a different report first before I could even choose from the parameter list to run the main report.

I believe it can be done though.
