I have installed the Visual Web Developer software. I had previously installed SQL 2005 Express and VB 2005 Express. I am running Win2K.

When the setup for the web developer ran, it did not ask if I wanted to install the .NET Framework, the MSDN 2005 Express or SQL 2005. This seemed correct to me since they were already installed with the SQL and VB I am assuming.

I am wanting to create and test my web pages with the ASP.NET Development Web Server, but when I try to run my test page thru my browser, I get the error message: “Unable to connect to Visual Studios Localhost web server.”

My first web site is in the folder: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\MyFirstWebSite

The web developer is installed in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition – ENU

A TEK-Tips Help thread states to

“Ensure that your asp.net files are in a folder within
C:\InetPub\ In Windows, all your web files that you want to have run on your web server must be in this folder! You can put them in subfolders if you wish, as long as they're within the directory.”

In the bottom right of my screen, there is a little white icon with the message “ASP.NET Development Server – Port 1428”, (the port # changes on different attempts) which tells me that the attempt is being made. I have a feeling my setup is not pointing me in the right direction.

Where did I go wrong? I am a bit leary of dropping files into other directories and getting too creative for my own good.

When I click over to design mode, my message “Hello World” does appear.

TIA,

Bill

In order to set up a website in a folder of your choice, you must pick the "file system" option when creating it. If you choose "HTTP", then it will need to be under Inetpub/ project>.
