view site parent directory

how can I view a sites parent directory.
If I am viewing a sub directory and click "parent Directory" my browser loads the site's index.html page but does not display the directory.

example

http://www.sitename/images/

shows me the directory of the images files

I want to see the parent directory of

http://www.sitename/

any help would be appreciated

I couldn't open any of those two links but anyway whenever you enter a site's URL, the index.htm file gets read and in that file you might be redirected to another page based on what the web site programmer has put there.
