View only access

I want to preserve the data of a company and still allow users "view only" access. In other words, they need to see the data, run the reports but not be able to manipulate any of the data in any way. This is a company that is no longer to be used but the historical data needs to be visible for maybe the next two years.

I also need to allow certain users normal access to another company with no access for everyone else.

I'm thinking that creating two user groups; one with access, one without should work.

The problem I see is that with user access, if you change one setting it changes it for all companies and not just specific ones.

No this is not true. You can make one company view only with visual menu builder. The thing you cannot do is synchronize security which will make all companies have the same security.

I figured it out.

I also have a lot of screenset modifications and user groups that I did not want to loose.

My solution was to create the view only company, create a single user for it with restricted view created through visual menu builder and then changed all the current users passwords so they could not log on except through the single user logon.

Thus everything is preserved and functional. Not elegant but useable. As I walk around I can see it being used as planned with a few users having complete access to the old company and the rest doing lookups as intended.

Thanks for the tip on synchronize security and not using it. Not that I use it now.
