The user's mail is on the server, so it is independant of the user's Notes client.
You have a rights issue - the user has probably changed the ACL for Default, and set the No Access level without according Read Public Documents rights in the ACL.
Ask the user to change that. If he doesn't, you won't access his Calendar.
