I am setting up the permissions for a Production Support staff to be able to monitor SQL Agent tasks, what do they need permission to to have the status field updated in EM?

If you are looking to give your Production team access to view the status of jobs in SQL Server Agent, your best bet may be to create some views on the system tables that hold that info, ie. sysjobs, sysjobhistory ...

It is far easier to implement this type of operation.
