I need to split the video on an XP Pro desktop to 2 projectors, which I can do with a video splitter box, however I also need the the desktop to be expanded across 2 monitors in the office. I only want the projectors to show the original desktop, not the expanded portion. Is any of this going to be possible?

Thanks,

In this post ArizonaGeek describes how he got his PCs working as double-monitor setups using simple VGA splitters: (the pictures are gone, but the advice is still there)

Then, it would just be a matter of using Windows Video config to select how you want to use your screens, as extended desktops or duplicate images

So theoretically I could go 1 vga Y cable off the video card then one end of Y cable to video splitter/amplifier box that will feed 2 projectors, then connect another Y cable to the second end of the first Y cable and then hookup 2 monitors to the second Y cable and do and expanded desktop on the XP machine. This is provided that I have a decent amount of RAM on the video card, say 512MB correct?

My only problem then would be to have the projectors on the first Y cable only showing the main desktop window, not the expanded desktop window. Is this possible or would I need Ultramon or something else also?

Not quite...you should only need one adapter, unless you are doing all this simultaneously. If you are, I'm not positive of the results, but it seems to make sense. Maybe ArizonaGeek will join us and offer his wisdom...

My suggestion would be to get a video card that supports two outputs; then split the primary output to your main monitor and the two projectors and use the secondary output to extend your desktop.

Or just get a cheap PCI video card if you currently have only one video output.

If you already have a video card installed (i.e. it's not integrated into the motherboard) and it only has one input; find out who made the chip on the card (Nvidia or ATI) then be sure to get a card that has a chip from the same manufacturer. It doesn't have to be the exact same chip, but I have found that they are fewer issues when the chips of two cards are both from either ATI or Nvidia.
