I have a video card that allows me to go out to TV.
Here is the question. When I go directly to the TV
all works well, but if I go through the VCR first using
RCA cable I get no picture.

Can I record from the computer through a VCR or is it not possible??

It should be the same. If it works on composite input of TV then it will work for VCR. But you have to remember to turn VCR to auxillary input to see it, not channel 3 or such.

On VCR video input is yellow connector. Remember to use 60Hz refresh rate, 640 x 480 size (NTSC cannot handle much above that). Your mileage may vary...
