Just the other day - suddenly the images started 'streaking' on my LCD display. I switched the display with another and the problem remained. So I guess the problem must be with the computer (maybe the video card?) This streaking effect can be described as the W2K login box appears against a pale white horizontal ribbon (the same vertical height as the box).

The computer is a HP Pavilion 9686C - I have not added any thing to it - so it must have a "stock " video card.

Any suggestions on how I should proceed?

How about running the DirectX diagnostics tool.

Next, you could update the latest version of DirectX for Windows 2K (possibly 8.1), and then get the drivers for you Video chipset / graphics.

You really should NOT use the HP Support downloads for this graphics update. After a quick check of the updates they have, they show very old drivers. You should identify the video card, the model & chipset and go to the manufacturers website and get some current drivers. Install those AFTER you get the latest version of DirectX 8.x for Win 2K.

If you have to, open the box and examine the video card, or use your manual to identify the video card.

Post back if you need more help.

Thanks for the update..but I am curious why would this start happening suddenly - I have not made any changes to the hardware/software - and have ahd the LCD monitor running on my system for months...?

Extras,
you ask: "I am curious why would this start happening suddenly..." ?

Well, simply put, it's a computer. It is complex in both hardware and software, and there are so many things that can go wrong, and do, that just about anything is possible.

** It could even be bad RAM ** (on either the Video card, or the system RAM)

I start with the software end (when doing this remotely).
If it was my computer, I would just grab a video card out of the pile and switch that. That would eliminate the # possibility. Why ? Because with the installation of a NEW video card, I would replace ALL the drivers and software associated with your current setup.
If the problem continued, then next I would grab a stick of RAM, and swap that.

However, this is a remote tech-support, and I doubt you have the parts sitting around, or the expertise to start swapping hardware (no offense intended).

** HAVE YOU MOVED your speakers close the the monitor ? Hey, any goofy thing can cause changes. You say you didn't make any changes, so maybe it is a hardware failure, but subtle changes in software could have occurred.

I'll check back.

The bast thing to do is change to standand video(svg) if the line are still in it them the video card is bad, if not then the driver are bad.

Excellent suggestion. I had totally forgot about the simple, but very effective method. Doh!

thanks..I am away from my computer and will get back to you tomorrow...
