My Acer laptop, XP SP2, suddenly switched to really blocky, large, pixellated icons with washed-out colours.

Next time I booted it up, it was fine but said the system had recovered from a serious error.

What's happened? Will it happen again? Why? What can I do to prevent it?

sounds like a problem with the graphiccard drivers, it also might be that the graphiccard is faulty (temp. probs)

check event viewer for errors

Thanks Lemon13 for the quick reply, but
check event viewer for errors
how do I do that, and what might I expect to see?

To view Event Viewer:

Right-click My Computer->Manage->Event Viewer->Look under Application and System. There will be a red X for critical system/application errors. Look back to the last time of day when the problem occurred.
