Hi.

I run Windows 7 Home on a Dell Inspiron 1720, with an intel core 2 duo processor. It originally had Vista onboard, but I've clean loaded W7, and all in all I'm very happy with it.

My problem has to do with video processing.

Whatever software I use to process video files (Powerdirector, Premiere or VirtualDub), I seem to have no compression codecs.

I've loaded DivX and Xvid codecs, and a couple of all-in-one packs, but nothing seems to show.

As a ruslt, I'm struggling with uncompressed files which are enormous, (try 96gig for a 55 minute avi, for example.

I can't seem to find anyone else having this error, so, and thoughts?

Thanks for the heads up.
Sadly, that's one I've already installed :(

Thinking, I'm wondering if somehow my programs are looking in the wrong place for the codecs. That they've been installed, but soehow in the wrong place. (Sounds silly, I expect, but I've installed/re-installed W7 a couple of times and some results seem random.)

Besides, I don't know where programs would look for codecs.

Have you considered uninstalling the codecs that you have installed and then settling on just one codec pack and reinstalling that one.

When it come time to reinstall, try right-clicking on the actual Setup.exe and selecting the "Run As Administrator" option? Do so even if your user is an Admin.

It might also be necessary to disable running anti virus software during any install.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Turk.

Thanks. Great tip, but WMP certainly thinks the codecs are installed. on the other hand, it's concentrating on playback codecs, not encoding codecs, if that makes sense.

linney.

I only installed the codec pack, because the proprietory Divx codec didn't install - or, at least, wasn't recognised - in the first place. But it's a good thought, with the admin, I'll give it a try.

(W7's habit of ignoring that my user is an admin user is a bit irritating, to be frank...)

let me throw myself into the fray...

1. uninstall all codec packs you have installed at this time...

2. uninstall all your Tools for encoding...

3. go to and DL that codec pack, it is the one I use at home and office...

4. now run CCleaner to clean out all tempfiles and logfiles...

5. install, using the "Run As Administrator" method mentioned by Linney, the above downloaded KLite Mega Codec Pack

6. install, same method as mentioned earlier, your encoding apps...

and to clear up some misconception, CODEC stands for CODING & DECODING, so essentially they are both "playback" and "encoding" codecs (to use your own words)...

PS: while installing the KLite Codec pack, it will or should remove older remnants and defunct codecs that may be left over after the uninstall...

PSS: do report back on your status...
