I've inserted a video clip into my FrontPage Web page, but it won't play. I tried saving it with different file name extensions, but was still unsuccessful. I have a Firewire card and the Ulead Studio software. Also, any recommendations on good video editing software?

Thanks!

What format of video are you using? Quicktime, AVI, WMV...?

ElEye,

Currently, I have it saved as .avi. It runs when I preview it within Frontpage using IE, but won't run once downloaded to my Geocities site. Thanks.

OK. AVI plays in Media Player. Here's an example of an embedded AVI:

If you embed in the above manner you will have a player with your movie in it.

If you instead just have a link to the movie it will either download or play in Media Player on the user's computer or in Media Player within IE6 if they are updated.

Be aware that you can only accomodate Windows users with AVI. For this reason my company uses Real, Quicktime and MPEG rather than AVI, when possible.

If you have a page to see of what you've done I can offer more specific advice.

RE: Editing, in your situation you would be best with Avid XpressDV which is now available as a software-only solution. Previously it was only sold with a computer. XpressDV is junior to the high-end Avid systems like Xpress, Media Composer and Symphony, but with a similar interface.

Best of success,

A) You should be able to create MPEG1 from Media Studio (Video Editor). Note that for some reason Media Studio's most recent update to v6.5 (I think it is) produces bad MPEGs. But v6.0 works fine.

B) If you want to create Quicktime I think you can use Media Studio. If so you want to use the Sorenson codec. This will take longer to create, but the results are better and smaller. There is also a Sorenson 3 which is different. Sorenson 3 requires Quicktime 5 to play and the Development Edition to encode. But my guess is you don't want to spend the $1K or so it costs.

C) If you want to create higher quality media in general you need something like Media Cleaner. Media Cleaner allows you to create various formats of video media including Quicktime, Real, AVI, MPEG, etc. But it is also perhaps more than what you'd want to spend for a personal website. ($600 and up)

Conclusion: I recommend you use Ulead Media Studio v6.0 to output Quicktime (assuming it can) using the Sorenson codec. Don't be alarmed if your render times are something on the order of 45 minutes per minute of video. This depends on your processor and OS, etc. Then embed using a player like this guy has: Mr. Plate is expert in these matters. What you want to emulate primarily is how his movies are formatted on the page: there's a play button and slider, and the Quicktime logo with its own link to help those that aren't yet updated or don't even have Quicktime.

Separately, I noticed that your movie's address was:
2 things are happening here, 1: it's pointing to your local drive. You need to import the movie into your web and point to that.
2: See all the %20's in there? Those are spaces. Nothing within your Web should have a space in its name. Remove them or change them to - or _ then you'll be safe.

Best of success!
-Dave
