Video chat-web cam

Can anyone point me in a direction for help with web cams. I am trying to use video chat with AOL Instant Messenger 6 between myself and my son in college. Are there any particular programs that work better with web cams than others? I am on windows XP, he is on VISTA. I'm not sure if our wireless router or his Vista operating system is somehow blocking us? We are testing it at home before he leaves for college.

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
