I'm using a slot 1 motherboard with a PIII-450 processor and 250MB of RAM. No matter what type of video card I use in the mother board; the thing always ends up in a a 640x480 16 color condition after a few days of use.

YEP; PCI, AGP, ISA; it doesn't seem to matter what type of card I try to use in this system. And, whether I run 800x600 high color or whatever, the system always reverts back to 640x480 16 color after a few reboots of the system.

Needless to say, the video boards are not damaged, they will still work fine in another system. The system in question is running Windows 98 SE.

This is a/an SIS5600 motherboard both AT and ATX capable.

Please feel free to point out some obvious thing I neglected in the setup.

Thank you,

The fact that this happens with several video cards that are known to be good suggests that there is something wrong other than the cards. I'll be brutally honest, you can spend an entire day trying new ways to try and solve your problem, and still end up nowhere.

It's either a Windows problem or a motherboard problem. Practically the only way to determine which it is is to do a complete reinstall of Windows and see if your video problems persist. If so, then the motherboard is flakey (SIS chipsets are not bought for their quality). If the problem goes away, then you know it was some glitch in Windows, but you don't have to worry about it anymore because you just reinstalled Windows erasing the problem.
