Hello forum,

I've just built my first pc and just about everything is running fine. My one issue is that I have a SATA hard drive and a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. The video card came with a cable that attaches to itself and has two more connectors - one goes to the power supply, and the other (legacy ATA plug) is supposed to go to the hard drive.

I've gone ahead and done that and everything seems to be working fine. However, I now have a "Safely Remove Hardware" icon appearing on my task bar (which makes me think that I've done something wrong).

Could anyone clear this up for me?

Thanks in advance!

-Sean

this icon is normally used for usb sticks/pcmcia cards. when you want to remove such a device do it with the icon, windows tells you then when it has finished writing (also cache) to the device so its save to unplugg it.

"(legacy ATA plug) is supposed to go to the hard drive." - is it the 4 pol. power connector? then you can use another one, its just bridged in case you dont have a free connector left.

Thanks for answering Lemon13 - I found the Power supply a little intimitading because of all the wires so I just wanted to make sure. (I'll repost when I reconnect the hard drive).

I have had a memory stick for sometime so I am familiar with what the icon is - but it shouldn't happen to my hard drive though right? I don't want it thinking that it's an external hard drive.

But, maybe this will go away once I re-hook things up.

Thanks again,
-Sean

With all the USB units I have connected, the "safely remove" icon stays on all the time. If you have WinXP, hide it. Otherwise, ignore it!

Hey micker and lemon,

I posted this question on another forum and they've informed me that it is normal for SATA hard drives to appear this way (their advice is to ignore it). I've only ever had ide drives so I was a little nervous about anything out of the ordinary.

Thanks again everyone!
