VI line numbers

Where does one put a global setting to turn off line numbers when bringing a file into VI?

Every time I bring a file into VI, it has line numbers. I know I can use :se nonu to turn it off but that is for the file I'm currently in. Where can I set it to default to "nonu" for any/all files I bring in to vi?
