Hi folks,

I just set up a new machine (AIX V6.1).
Problem is that when using VI editor the backspace key always display a ^? instead of doing what it's supposed to do.

I checked all

.kshrc
.profile
/etc/profile
/etc/environment

settings and compared them with the settings on other machines that don't have this problem.

Also tried set -o vi or set -o emacs ...

What am I missing ??

Regards
Thomas

That is more than likely a terminal or ssh/telnet client (PuTTY?) settings problem...

You were right !
Thanks a lot !

As p5wizard says it looks like a terminal client problem. I sometimes have this issue when using an old putty version, often with telnet but not with ssh.

When I have this problem I type "stty erase ^?" (using backspace to type ^?) and after that the backspace key just works fine.

If you always use the same terminal you can add this line to the .profile.

Or you can edit the default settings of PuTTY under "Terminal -> Keyboard: "The Backspace Key" => Control-H instead of Control-? (127)
