Hi All. HP2470 11.11, lost power last weekend & have been battling with how to get our system to recognize VG01 again. vgscan ->
Following Physical Volumes belong to one Volume Group.
Unable to match these Physical Volumes to a Volume Group.
Use the vgimport command to complete the process.
/dev/dsk/c4t2d0
/dev/dsk/c4t3d0
/dev/dsk/c4t14d0

vgscan: has no correspoding valid raw device file under /dev/rdsk.
Verification of unique LVM disk id on each disk in the volume group
/dev/vg01 failed.

All of the drives are checking out OK via mstm & claimed under ioscan. Devices ARE under /dev/rdsk & /dev/dsk.

I have renamed my lvmtab file & run vgscan again with no success of updating the lvmtab.

There is data on these drives & they are being used. Any idea on how to fix this w/o losing all my data in VG01?

no, for some reason I was thinking that would kill my data.
So what I'm going to do is the following

vgimport -v /dev/vg01 /dev/dsk/c4t0d0 /dev/dsk/c4t1d0 /dev/dsk/c4t2d0 /dev/dsk/c43d0 /dev/dsk/c4t14d0

Then IF that takes...

vgchange -a y vg01

Does that sound correct? I've been blessed with not having many major issues with my servers, so my skills are a tad rusty.. Thanks in advance

that's correct. vgimport will NOT erase any data, it will take the disks and leave them as a VG. Remember to create the folder in /dev and create the node (mknod). if it exists, you could try exporting the VG01 first.

Cheers.

what's the command on the mknod? I did forget that step. Thank you so much

mkdir /dev/vg01
mknod c 64 0xAA0000 /dev/vg01/group

(I don't have a hp-ux with me right now, see man mknod)
where AA is the minor number

Cheers.

sorry, mknod is:

mknod /dev/vg01/group c 64 0xAA0000

where AA is the minor number

in order to know what minor to use issue:

ll /dev/*/group

and note a free 0xAA0000

Chacal, Inc.

ll /dev/*/group
crw-r----- 1 root sys 64 0x000000 Nov 6 2002 /dev/vg00/group
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 64 0x010000 Aug 13 2003 /dev/vg01/group
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 64 0x020000 Aug 13 2003 /dev/vg02/group
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 64 0x030000 Aug 13 2003 /dev/vg03/group
cr--r--r-- 1 root sys 64 0x040000 Mar 30 2004 /dev/vg04/group

Can I just use the existing '01' from the original vg01? I'm trying to but it's stating it already exists?

mknod /dev/vg01/group c 64 0x010000
mknod: File exists

vgchange -a y /dev/vg01
vgchange: Couldn't activate volume group "/dev/vg01":
Quorum not present, or some physical volume(s) are missing.

Thank you again for all your help. I would usually be scoping out ITRC on hp's site, but it's down today.)

no, you can not use an existing defined VG...

try exporting the vg01 first

Chacal, Inc.

ugh!

vgexport -m vg01.mymap /dev/vg01
vgexport: Volume group "/dev/vg01" does not exist in the "/etc/lvmtab" file.
vgexport: Couldn't export volume group "/dev/vg01

hmmm... do you see any entry in [tt]strings /etc/lvmtab[/tt] regargind vg01?

Chacal, Inc.

/dev/vg00
/dev/dsk/c1t15d0
/dev/dsk/c3t15d0
/dev/vg02
/dev/dsk/c4t6d0
/dev/vg03
/dev/dsk/c4t7d0
/dev/dsk/c4t8d0
/dev/dsk/c4t9d0
/dev/dsk/c4t10d0
/dev/dsk/c4t11d0
/dev/vg04
/dev/dsk/c4t12d0
/dev/dsk/c4t13d0

hmmmm.... OK - should I just delete the exisitng /dev/vg01 & start again from the beginning? Then just give this new vg01 a new minor of 5. Will that cause any issues?

no issues with that, after all, lvmtab rules in LVM. but 01 going to be free so you can use it.

Cheers.
