VFP6 and Windows Vista ? 3

We currently work with VFP6 and, mostly, WindowsXP Pro.

I was just asked if I heard anything whether VFP6 is going to work without problems in Windows Vista. I suspect they do a research on whether our VFP6 actually should be replaced with VFP9 (as we requested times and again), or, possibly, if we going to replace XP with Vista when it is publicly available.

All I could say that I haven't heard of any troubles, but mostly not because there are none, but because people who are front-line enough to use beta-version of Vista, are usually not the same people who still own 3 versions old VFP.

But did anyone actually tried/heard anything at all about possibilities of VFP6 working in Windows Vista?

Thanks.

I still use v6, v7, v8 and v9 all the time I do not upgrade all code and have many apps in older versions to maintain. I have a vista beta running and though I have not performed a lot of heavy testing on all functionality I have not had anything turn up broken YET! Give me just a brief description of what your app does and I can at least say if I have attempted that sort of thing like Forms and Data "NO PROBLEM" apposed to Lots of WinAPI calls that I have not tried yet. I would say if the app is pretty generic you should not have big issues. I remember when I went from DOS to Win95 I had some painful stuff however in the big picture things worked out

Thanks!
Looks like interesting and useful reading.
Will read it through and report to the people that asked.

Steve,

Current applications are not too complex; some of them are converted and upgraded from some 2.x versions, some are created in VFP6.
But I believe, the question I was asked implied not only current apps, but also future development, something to this effect: "What if we get new mashines with Vista when it is available, some time soon (on the schedule for upgrading computers here), and leave you with your VFP6, since it can do all we need - do we really need to upgrade you to VFP9?"

The official word from the Fox Team is that VFP 9.0 has some issues that they are planning to fix in an SP. I assume there will be some issues with VFP 6.0.

VFP 9.0 should run as a 32-bit app in compatibility mode just like most other current 32-bit applications. Sure, lots of them will need tweaking too.

Didn't I read somewhere that various flavors of Vista would be sold including one that was limited to 32-bit modes? Probably some cut-rate home or portable version...

Vista will ship in both 32 and 64 bit versions.. the same as XP.

Craig, does it mean that in order for it to work with VFP, we will need to get the 32 bit version? Or what, if at all, would it mean?

Also, maybe you know what other VFP versions, besides VFP9, are still supported by Microsoft and would get a service pack to fix the Vista problems?

Thanks.

You can run 32 bit applications on a 64 bit OS. VFP has been tested in this scenario and runs fine, just lots faster.

Only VFP 9.0 will get an SP to fix Vista problems. I think this is appropriate as Sedna will require VFP 9.0.

Thanks everyone for the input.
It has been informative.

Just saw this thread and thought I would toss in my 2 cents. Out VFP 6.0 application (150+ screens, 30+ report forms) runs just fine in Vista RC1 so far. All functionallity seems to be there.

I did load the VFP 6.0 development system in Vista, but ran into a snag trying to apply SP5. The update fails saying it needs MDAC 2.5 or greater, but Vista claims to have 2.5 loaded. Really haven't pursued the problem as we plan to stick with our XP PRO development platforms.

FWIW, I was able to install and use FPW2.6 development system on Vista and run both .PRG's and compiled .EXE's....
