Now it's clear VFP won't run on Windows 9...

...because there will be no Windows 9.

Since yesterday you can get a CTP of Windows 10 and follow the development of the next Windows version. From the first descriptions you find about the next windows, mostly still talking about Windows 9, you can see it still has a desktop, it even merges Apps into windows. Visit and to get the picture.

The rough view alone makes clear the desktop becomes the center of desktop computers again and Win32/Winform apps will run on that desktop. That's also clear from what was said in thread184-1735915, that 32bit apps will still work, but now I'm sure someone will test this and have a concrete proof.

Bye, Olaf.

First notice: There still are 32bit editions of the tech preview ISO downloads. Not that it would matter, I download the english 64bit edition and am confident it'll have the SysWOW64 subsystem.

Bye, Olaf.

The only laptop I'd install this CTP on doesn't support this, so I'd have to buy new hardware. I'm still confident someone else will try this and report soon. Maybe someone here?

Bye, Olaf.

Yes, I did that with Win8, but it isn't very usable. Just to confirm what I think I'll not do that again, I'd like to use it, that needs it usable.

Bye, Olaf.

I tried on a VM anyway and all I got was a black screen showing
Code:
Your PC needs to restart.
Please hold down the power button.
Error code: 0x0000005D
Parameters:
0x00000000178BFBFF
0x000000002B93FB7F
0x0000000000000013
0x0000000000000000
From a google search I found others had a similar issue with the old Win8 CTP preview and in that case it was NX (a CPU feature) missing. This is set in my case, but my parameter values also differ, so this most probably points out another error/missing feature. Anyway, I need newer hardware even for hosting a VM capable to run x64 Win10.

But Michael Zacharias posted about his success in MSDN Forums. A VFP8 app works on his Win10 installation.

Bye, Olaf.

I have a Windows 10 - 64 VM on a AMD FX-8120 ( select a "Windows 8.1" machine at creation time ):

runs very fast.

I also got Windows 10 x64 running now by using VirtualBox and using the presets for a Windows 8.1 guest (VM) system.

Yes, and to confirm what Marco already shows, it runs. Not so fast for me, but that's as expected. My PC is put together for low power usage, not for performance, it's just an ITX board with AMD E-350 CPU.

The normal SysWOW64 folder exists, so we do have the 32bit subsystem, otherwise VFP wouldn't run.

The look and feel compares very much to Windows 8(.1) with a fixed UI without the separate start screen. I don't see and feel any other major change yet, but we'll see when MS reveals next steps in preview updates.

This preview degrades any news about Windows 10 (or 9, as it was expected) only supporting 32bit software (and hardware!) to be just rumours.

Bye, Olaf.
