I tried to reinsatll xp, inserted the cd etc. But I thought(stupidly) that windows would erase everything on the disk before it reinsalled itself. Of course it did not. So I have got all sorts of problems with old settings, bugs before they where patched etc. Can someone please inform me how to wipe/erase/format basically get rid of all the crap of my hard drive so that I have in essence a virgin hard-drive? Please help!

Boot off floppys from M$ site.
Now when it asks you what you want to do tell it to reformat/delete the partition (think u press l key somewhere)
This should get you what you want

Boot off floppies? Just boot off the cd, you can simply delete the partition it finds, recreate it, then you'll be forced to format. The option to format is there, you probably skipped it.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Same as you did before (disk in the cdrom then boot) but don't go for "repair intallation" opt for installing new and format NTFS, certainly no need for floppies!

Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Just personal preference i prefer floppies to the CDROM way ive had problems with cd booting
