VERY SLOW when transferring files between two hard drives...

Here is my setup:
Pentium 4 - 3.2GHz
1GB of RAM
Hard Drive 1 - 120GB 7200RPM ATA
Hard Drive 2 - 60GB 7200RPM ATA

Whenever I move or copy files between my hard drives, it is very slow. For example, a 1.5GB folder takes almost 20 minutes. Is there anything that you can think of that would cause this? Copying or moving files between partitions on the same drive are normal speed (very fast).

Make sure the boot drive is connected to the IDE 1 channel, the secondary drive is connected to the IDE 2 channel, both HD's are connected to the MB with 80 wire IDE cables that are correctly installed with the colored stripe along the one edge of the cable located next to the power lead on the back of the drive and next to pin 1 at the MB, and DMA(or Ultra DMA) is enabled in BIOS for both IDE controllers and in Device Manager for both drives.

Ultra DMA is enabled for both drives. Cable is correct as well.

Edit that - Both are on the Primary Channel. Ultra DMA is enabled for both drives, but Device 1 (60GB Drive) says Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode. Any reason why?

Got it figured out. For some reason the BIOS wasn't detecting it. Turned it to Auto, now everything is cool.

Thanks!

You're welcome.
Glad that you were able to fix things.

I wonder if you would check your transfer speed now. By coincidence i checked out the transfer speed the other day on a new build and the file was 1.5 gigs as well. It took 4 min 15 seconds.
This is ata, 7200 spin, ultra dma mode on both drives and equates to about 350 mb per minute.
This is win xp pro, P4 2.4 cpu, 512 mb ram, separate video card.

No problem. This is moving a 1.33GB folder that contained 3 files.

HD 1 to HD 2 = approximately 64 seconds
HD 2 to HD 1 = approximately 65 seconds

Much better than the 15 minutes or so it took before. : )

hey i have the oppsite of this problem and i have been to several forums with no help:
