After running the windows scandisk util, the hard disk has had a very slow transfer rate of about 3500 bytes a second when it should be around 25,000 - 30,000 bytes a second. During the scan, the disk did make unusual noises. Any Ideas? Thanks.

Bit more info - how do you clock these transfer speeds, and what is the O/S and drive configuration? My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

I used SiSoft Sandra Pro, DiskSpeed32, and winbench 99 to read the rate of the drive, The hard drive is a 20Gb Fujitsu MPG3204ATE with Windows XP Pro OS. The drive is an ATA100 with DMA and Smart Enabled

I have the exact same problem. My ATA/100 IBM 60gxp hard drive is posting transfer rates on par with an ATA/33 drive (extremely slow!!). I thought it was the onboard IDE controller that was the problem, so I bought a Promise Ultra 100tx2 controller; but, to my surprise, this thing didn't help one bit. I've tried variouse configurations with no luck. Ahh...I really need some help here.

1) Are you using 80-pin IDE cables (with the blue and grey connectors)

2) Is anything else (ie the CD-Rom) sharing the IDE channel?

3) What is the Sandra benchmark result for your drive (for comparison)

4) Did you switch the disable Windows cache setting in Sandra (makes a huge difference)

5) Are you using the manufacturer's IDE drivers?

I hope this helps CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

1)yes, im using a good quality 80pin cable
2)no, it's the only thing on the cable
3)around 11000 (in between ata/33 and ata/66 speeds)
4)yes
5)yes, the latest xp drivers

so, unfortunatly, i've already tried all that; and i've tried many other things as well. I've tried everything. I'm stuck. I really hope someone can help me soon.

thanks,
josh

May not be able to specifically help original inquirer, but maybe can give a clue to the guy with the IBM Deskstar drive. I had a 68 MB IBM Deskstar and it got slower and slower with use. Ran full surface scan Scandisk and it was taking 12 to 15 hours per 4GB partition. It would find and mark some bad clusters. If I ran Scandisk again, I would pick up more bad clusters. What was happening was disk was failing and was having to reread the disk many times. It was in warranty so sent it back to IBM and they replaced it. There is a current class action suit against IBM. Any time a disk fine has to be read again and again, transfer rate slows down.
