I'm writing this for a friend whose desktop computer exhibits a very annoying habit. More often than not, but not every time, at power on it displays a "Compaq" screen that can remain for 5 minutes or more before finishing the boot. It has been doing this ever since it was new. Any ideas about cause and cure?

Remove everything non-essential connected to the computer (USB devices, etc.) and see if the problem goes away.
Try resetting the BIOS to defaults and again see what happens.
See if there is a BIOS update.
Call in for warranty support/replacement if under warranty
