We have Veritas Netbackup 4.5v and we have been trying to backup a directory of about 475Gb and we also see a du -s showing to be 720GB. First I can't understand why has is showing up as double compared to an ls -al on a Solaris 8 system.

Now why does this take 36 hours to back up data of this size? Do any have an idea and if so I would thank the person for guidance on this.

If anyone needs more info on this please send me an email.
Thanks
Nicholas

The difference between the ls -l and the du -s is the block size.
use du -sk for 1024 block size and then they should jive.

Most often slow backups is due to the network connectivity.
check name resolution and most importantly ennsure you are using
FULL DUPLEX - FIXED communication rate

Could you give some info on how many files you have under that directory?

If we talk millions of files it will take a long long time to backup even if you have the perfect network and performance settings.

In case of millions of files see if FlashBackup can help you.

Along with the # of files please provide the drive type you are currently using and the number of streams being used to back this directory up. I have some similarly sized backups and I break the backups into 4-6 different streams depending upon my SLA time. This is great for those who have a number of drives free. You may be limited though??
