Very simple filtering with awk

Hi all,
I'm a noob with awk and I need your help in filtering a csv file.

4378|26-09-2011|7|..|..|......
4378|28-09-2011|7|..|..|......
4378|30-09-2011|7|..|..|......
4378|01-40-2011|7|..|..|......
4399|26-09-2011|7|..|..|......
4315|11-09-2011|7|..|..|......


I need to filter and save in another files all the lines that contain 4378 in the first column and where date (column 2) is between 26-09-2011 and 28-09-2011.

awk -F\| '$1=="4378"&&(d=substr($2,7,4)substr($2,3,4)substr($2,1,2))>="2011-09-26"&&d<="2011-09-28"' /input/file

Tested with [tt]gawk[/tt] and [tt]mawk[/tt].
