very large files in offiles fd9 folder

I have some very large (4 gig) files in one of the offiles folders, the fd9 folder.
the large files have an fd9 extension.
they are several years old.

these files cannot really be 4 gig.
nevertheless, i need to get rid of them.
can i just delete them, or will i screw up the system ?

It has been my experience when I find these huge 4 gig files they were created because of some type of Groupwise data corruption problem and they are ok to delete.
