This is a very basic (maybe even stupid to some), but how are files shared in a native Unix environment?? I have no problems setting up Unix and Linux and sharing files using FTP, but I would like to know how exactly you share files between *nix systems. (Example, in Windoze, you just goto Network Neibourhood and browse for resources, or map a network drive). How is this done in Unix? Is there a tutorial on this subject somewhere that I can find? (No luck so far, every Unix or Linux tutorial seems to skip over this).

Generally Unix network sharing is done with NFS.

Here is an NFS How-to for Linux:
Here is an NFS tutorial for FreeBSD:
For a more complete description, just do some searching on the web for NFS tutorials.

Another point I must make, though, is that FreeBSD and Linux systems can also access a Windows shared network, using software called Samba ( This is different, and is only recommended if you need to network between Windows and Unix, or if you want a Unix server to act as a Windows NT fileserver.
