How the I check the version running on a freeBSD server?

The easiest way is
Code:
sysctl kern.version

HI,

why not using "uname -a".

I'm a newbie- so this may be the right answer to the wrong question.. but my OS version for FreeBSD shows up on my Telnet welcome screen when I log in.

The reason it shows up in your telnet window is because it is contained in /etc/motd .. you should use "uname -a".
