I'm a newbie to Linux, and have what is probably a straight forward question.

How can you tell what verison of a given software package is running if you don't use a package manager (like RPM) to install it? I've installed OpenSSH using a tarball, and I want to be able to produce something for my bosses showing that the latest version is installed.

Thanks for the tip. It got me where I needed to go. (It also pointed out that I wasn't running the newer version; all straightened out now.)
