Version Control

We're evaluating paths to take for version control. Things like source safe seem to give a platform to keep copies of your files and allow you to provide descriptions of your changes. On the other hand, we're thinking about developing an in house application, to actually record imports and exports, as well as object/condition changes that happen on each export.

Does anyone have any good experiences with version control that they'd like to share?
