Not sure about 8i (I don't use it) but at 9.0 use

SQL> select * from v$version;

BANNER
----------------------------------------------------------------
Oracle9i Release 9.0.1.0.0 - 64bit Production
PL/SQL Release 9.0.1.0.0 - Production
CORE 9.0.1.0.0 Production
TNS for IBM/AIX RISC System/6000: Version 9.0.1.0.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 9.0.1.0.0 - Production

This won't work at 8.0

SQL> select * from v$version;

BANNER
----------------------------------------------------------------
Oracle8 Enterprise Edition Release 8.0.5.1.0 - Production
PL/SQL Release 8.0.5.1.0 - Production
CORE Version 4.0.5.0.0 - Production
TNS for IBM/AIX RISC System/6000: Version 8.0.5.0.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 3.3.2.0.0 - Production
