version 2003 Why would it prompt for logon after opening Word doc?

I added two Word documents to our WEB site for users to open. When you click on the link it opens either Word doc OK but when you hit the back button it pops up the WEB site login as though I am logging into the WEB site using Front Page. I have 3 .pdf files in the same folder as the Word docs and it does not do that for them.
Any Ideas how to stop this?
I checked the fodler permissiona dn it just has "Run Scripts" and "Allow files to be browsed" checked, everything else is grayed out.
