Hi,

I just recently got Verizon DSL setup on my pc (WinXP Pro). I used to have cable modem and was able to successfully login to Yahoo/Hotmail email accounts without any problems. Now that I have DSL, I cannot login to either. Does anyone know why this is the case?

Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.
Laszlo

Thanks for the response, bcastner. I checked, and I don't have ICF enabled on my machine.

One thing I forgot to mention was that, I still have access to my cable modem. So, if I go back and login through my cable modem service, everything is fine again.

I am only having this problem with Verizon's DSL. I also tried with another browser (Netscape 7.0) because I thought that Verizon's software may have updated some of IE's settings, but that didn't work either.

I'm baffled and not sure what to do...I called Verizon and they do not even want to help for a minute. They're explanation is that if I can connect to the internet, then it is not their issue.

Run the New Connection Wizard, specify a Home or Small Business Network, the connection type requires a password and username, and specify the full email address of your first or primary email account, and its password, e.g. myemailacct@verizon.net, password

This indicates to XP that you want to use their PPoE native service. You do not want to use the Verizon software to make the connection.

Also, see this thread. It may be a simple date, time and timezone issue: thread779-552352

hello all, im new too the forum, i went from dial up too dsl, and also added a laptop and router too use the one dsl account with my laptop and my desktop, problem, whenever live updates for my desktop or laptop come in, they wont download saying that "cant find connection" when, im always connected too the dsl, so whats going on....thank u [bigglasses]

I tried setting up a new connection as you told me, but still no success. I first uninstalled the Verizon DSL connection, because every time the wizard wanted to setup a new connection, it was trying to make use of the same PPPoE that Verizon's install had.

So anyway, once I unistalled theirs, I ran the wizard again. I was successfully able to install a new PPPoE connection. I can get out on the net no problem, but again, I cannot access any online webmail accounts. Plus, one more thing that I noticed was that, on occasion, I also cannot access certain links embedded on a page.

I am getting very fed up with DSL. Do you all feel that these are small things that I can eventually get through...or is it just simply not worth the effort and heartache.

Thanks again for all your help so far!

This is not a DSL issue, I believe. First thing, you want to set the MTU of your machine to 1492. I use DRTCP, a freeware utility, to set this value. Run a "Speed Test" at this link, and the link for DRTCP will be at the end of the test results:
After rebooting, check that your system date, time, and time zone settings are correct. If these are off many sites will deny you access.

Now try the sites again.

If still no joy, look at these two troubleshooting articles by Microsoft:

I went to the website and tried to run the speed test...I never got a reply back from the speed test. It gave me an I/O error. Honestly, it seemed like it timed out on me. I waited about 4 minutes before I got the error.

I then went to do the standard MTU test by going to a dos prompt and doing the following:

C:\>ping -f -l 1472

I was told to drop the test packet size down until I reach a packet size that does not fragment. What was interesting here is that I got responses until I dropped the packet size down to 1453. After going below 1453, I kept getting "Request Timed Out" error. There definitely seems to be a problem here. Do you have any insight to this?

THanks.
Laszlo

Some times the DSLR report site is too busy to handle a request.

It looks to me as if you have a Java VM issue. Go to this link, scroll to the bottom, and upgrade your Java VM:
If your workstation is an Intel P4, under IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, un-tick or un-echeck the use of the Microsoft VM JIT compiler. (It requires a reboot).

Try the tweak test again, and tell us here what is happening.
