I am trying to learn the Veritas Net backup software and I seem to understand the policies. This is what I have so far: I have a master server and have a tape library (which holds 20 tapes) and I currently have 8 100 Gig /200 Gig compressible tapes, I have added an extra nic card with a different IP address in all of the 7 servers I wish to back up so there will be no extra traffic on my network. I want to use the grandfather-father-son rotation schema. This is what I want to do; First Sunday of the month have a full backup and rotate out, then have incrementals for 2 weeks, then another full backup and rotate out, so on and so on until the 4th full back up which will be the 1st full backup I will rotate back in. After 3 months of this I will rotate a full back up offsite as the grandfather and continue the process again, so with this idea I would have a quarterly offsite full back up of the 7 servers.

Now my question is how do I determine the retention period and the frequency with my plan as described above?
And how can I make sure that my full backups are only on certain tapes and not mixed in with my incremental back up tapes? I would want a full back up on 3 different tapes and incrementals on (n) many different tapes.

I have one policy to do a full and another policy to do the incremental, is this correct? Or, do I need a policy that has both full and incremental backups?

I do know that a full backup for all 7 servers will be about 450 Gigs large. So if I compress that I should be able to use only 2 and ½ tapes. And leave the rest of the tapes for the incrementals.

I also want to set the retention period so that I can re-use or overwrite the 2 weeks of incremental.
