How do I enable disk group in Veritas. My disk is failing and my disk group is currently is disable. Can you help?

Thanks

Urgent....

Are you sure it's the disk group that's disabled and not the volume?

If you type vxdg list, what does it say in the STATE column?

Normally a volume will not be disabled by a failing disk unless it is in great jeopardy, i.e. if both plexes (mirrors) of the volume are damaged, etc.

Do you have a replacement disk?

If you type vxprint -v, are all or any of your volumes enabled?

Questions, questions, always questions...

Annihilannic.

I have just fixed a smilliar problem. Vxprint was saying the plex was disbaled but having done this many many many many many wonderfull times before I knew what to do.

First umount the file system. I had to use

umount -f /whatever

to force it off line

Then use the vxmend command

vxmend fix stale <plex>
vxmend fix clean <plex>
vxvol start <vol>
mount /whatever

Should do it quite nicley thank you.

Can you give me the example: I am very new with Veritas.

What is plex? and do I enter the entire command?

This is how I tried to mount the filesystem and error message follow by it.

mount /RAID-B-qio-db
vxfs mount: Cannot open /dev/vx/dsk/A5200-dg/RAID-B: No such device or address

Thanks,
Bao

Whent I did vxprint:

vxprint -v
Disk group: A5100-dg

TY NAME ASSOC KSTATE LENGTH PLOFFS STATE TUTIL0 PUTIL0
v RAID-D fsgen ENABLED 140509184 - ACTIVE - -
v RAID-E fsgen ENABLED 69206016 - ACTIVE - -

v RAID-B fsgen DISABLED 88391680 - ACTIVE - -
v RAID-C fsgen ENABLED 35356672 - ACTIVE - -

Do you have any idea what I need to do?

Run this

vxprint -Ath

And stick up the info. Lets have a proper look.

Can you post the output of:

[tt]vxprint -th RAID-B
vxdisk list[/tt]

Right follow these steps.

vxvol stop
umount -f /whereever its mounted
vxmend fix stale RAID-B
vxmend fix clean RAID-B

repeat for each RAID-B-N

then do

vxvol start
mount /whatever mnt point is

I have a little Veritas admin guide that I wrote a bit back that would probably be a lot of help for you. Email me at needsleep64@hotmail.com if you want it.

Cheers

It looks bad.

You've lost a disk in both plexes (mirrors). Are you sure the disks have failed completely?

Can you do a prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/c1t23d0s2 on each of the failed disks? If that works, try an analyse/read in format.

If they both work you may be able to replace the "failed" disks with themselves and get your data back, but it's fiddly and I can never remember the exact procedure...

Do you think I can call you? I am in critical position to the system up, and I am dead stuck with VERITAS.

the filesystem RAID-B-qio-db is not event mounted.

i appreciate if you allow me to call you.

Thanks you very much.

I get the error message when I do the following:

prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/c1t20d0s2
prtvtoc: /dev/rdsk/c1t20d0s2: Unable to read Disk geometry

Ok here is another way to do it. Luckily I documented the steps last it happened.

vxmend –o force on RAID-B

Now run

vxmend fix clean RAID-B

Now

vxvol start RAID-B

Then run fsck on /dev/bx/dsk/whatever

Then mount the disk.

run df -k to check the disk is online and cool.

Sorry matey didn't notice the NODEVICE bit. Run fsck on it and see what that reports.

Still have a problem, I did the following:

# vxmend -o force on RAID-B
# vxmend fix clean RAID-B
vxvm:vxmend: ERROR: Plex RAID-B not in configuration
# vxmend fix clean RAID-B-02
# vxvol start RAID-B
vxvm:vxvol: ERROR: Volume RAID-B has no associated data plexes
#

Although the prtvtoc output looks bad too. If all three disks are broken like that you'll be restoring from backup. You were unlucky as well that two of the disks contain the same stripe.

Annihilannic.

Run

vxmend fix clean RAID-B-01

vxmend fix clean RADI-B-03

then try and start vxvol RAID-B again.

Run

vxmend fix clean RAID-B-01

vxmend fix clean RADI-B-03

then try and start vxvol start RAID-B again.

I am able to recover one of the failed disk.

when I ran :
prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/c1t23d0s2
* /dev/rdsk/c1t23d0s2 partition map
*
* Dimensions:
* 512 bytes/sector
* 133 sectors/track
* 27 tracks/cylinder
* 3591 sectors/cylinder
* 4926 cylinders
* 4924 accessible cylinders
*
* Flags:
* 1: unmountable
* 10: read-only
*
* First Sector Last
* Partition Tag Flags Sector Count Sector Mount Directory
2 5 01 0 17682084 17682083
3 15 01 0 3591 3590
4 14 01 3591 17678493 17682083
#

How do the format?

Try the vxmend commands on each plex a

vxmend fix clean RAID-B-03
vxmend fix clean RAID-B-01

Like you did for RAID-B-02 then run, that one is OK, then run fsck on the /dev/vx/dsk/whatever. Trust me young un. It will work !
